Exceptional concert: the founder of the Buena Vista Social Club project will be performing in the opening event of the Jazz in the Park Festival, with his Big Band, Afro-Cuban All Stars.
14 of the best Cuban musicians of all time, members of the band Juan de Marcos Afro-Cuban All Stars, will be performing in national premiere, in Cluj.
Their concert, combining Jazz with the Afro-Cuban style, will take place at the Hungarian Opera, June 21st, on the first day of the festival, and starting today, the tickets are on sale.
The Cuban music legend, Juan de Marcos, bandleader, music director and founder of the phenomenon Buena Vista Social Club, carries forward, through Afro-Cuban All Stars, the extraordinary energy transmitted by the Buena Vista style.
“I’ve always been fascinated with Cuban musicians and their interpretation. The joy they find in singing is fantastic, which is why their music is full of positive energy, very lyrical, very easy to listen to and understand. If their music would define a people, overall, I think Cuba would be the most exotic country on Earth. It all started with Buena Vista Social Club, which was a global phenomenon, mainly due to this joy. And now we will have Cluj Afro Cuban All Stars, a project that continues the Buena Vista phenomenon and has spread around the world, yet it has not been here so far. In my opinion, this concert is a must listen for all music enthusiasts”, says Jazz in the Park Festival Director Alin Vaida.
Afro-Cuban All Stars stands out through bolero, chachachá, salsa, son montuno, timba, guajira, danzón, rumba and abakua rhythms.
It’s been over 20 years since the musician and bandleader Juan de Marcos Gonzales, considered a legend of the Cuban music, achieved international fame with the global music phenomenon Buena Vista Social Club. Since then, him and the band Afro Cuban All Stars have and still promote Cuban music worldwide.
“What I’m trying to do is create a bridge between contemporary and traditional Cuban music. I’m trying to mix both things so people can realize that Cuban music didn’t stop in time, that it developed in this long period when Cuban music disappeared from the market””, claims the bandleader Juan de Marcos Gonzales.
The Guardian writes about the big band that it brings about a blast of sun-baked sultriness and strictly magic, while the The Telegraph comments that the band marks the glorious return of Cuban music to its golden age.
